Bye Bye Phone

Mommy should keep her fingers down lol

One of the scary perk of living in an apartment is the height! I kid you not we’re on the 30th floor…

On Sunday,  Mr. X got to spent some bonding time with Lil’ A.

Little that we know their times together will involved, security, cell phone and a balcony!

Yeah, Mr. X was playing with Lil’ A in his toy room when his cell phone rang. He left Lil’ A to answer the call from work and didn’t realize that someone already sneaked out of the room.

Couple of minutes later Mr. X started to get suspicious because Lil’ A was mighty quiet! He went to the toy room…the little monkey wasn’t there anymore.

He found him in our bedroom… outside at the balcony, just squatting down with a huge mighty ‘I’m-in-deep-trouble‘ grin on his face.

He had just threw Mr. X’s century old blackberry phone from work that he never use anyway outside the balcony! Is it just a normal toddler curiosity or this one just having too much fun dropping things out? He does this at my mom’s house too, from the second floor!

Later, security guy came up and gave Mr. X a warning about the incident. Oh believe me someone got a very strong warning and time out!

I couldn’t care less about the cell phone but it freaked me out to think that Lil’ A can open the sliding door to our balcony – when we thought the lock was pretty complicated for his little fingers. We had another sliding door with lock installed in the living room – for the balcony – but not our room. His bedroom and toy room have safety railings covering the windows but we didn’t child proof the balcony in our room. Huge mistake! So, Mr. X is stopping by Ace Hardware today after work to find some kind of child-proof lock. No, we better not gamble on “Oh he won’t do that…” scenario. I had read enough stories of horror apartment accidents involving children in this city to make me paranoid!

So people, if you have one curious toddler like we does, you better double checks your bolts and locks!

Updated: This post was written while Mr. X and I had been separated for months.

Weekly Round Up

Can you tell he's upset?

Failed to join the fun on Friday Flip-offs so I’d just post a few updates on the life front from my neck of the wood…

Word sentence of the week:One more time, please, Mommy, please…” insert a smile as sweet as a bucket of sugar that will gives you toothache! From telling Lil’ A to stop jumping up and down the bed to telling him to climb down from his Oma’s windows railing! Does bargaining skills even start this early?

On potty training: Yes we are a little ‘behind’ on this department but I’m not one who have a time limit and push Lil’ A to be fully potty trained by a certain age. He’s actually been doing pretty good about going ‘pipis‘ (Indonesian for peeing) in the toilet for months now but he refused to ditch the pull-ups. For almost two weeks now he’s been wearing cute little big boy’s brief during the day. Some accident here and there but that’s to be expected right? One thing that we are still struggling is going No. 2! He would demanded that I put on his pull-up just so he can go ‘poo-poo’ I’m totally at lost as what to do when it comes to this part…will probably consult Mr. Google in a few!

On the job hunting front: Still jobless here! Either I am getting too old for these companies standards or my resume scared the heck out of them, I’d prefer the later actually hahaha. It was one of my aunt that told me about the later part last night when I complaint about how difficult it is to find a job here now. These typical Indonesian standard of ‘good looking appearance and maximum age of 28 – 30 years old’ are pissing me off but since I’m aiming mostly for big or foreign company I had proved myself at every single interviews that I do have the skills. As to why I still haven’t heard from any one of them is beyond me! So the search goes on…

About being a guest poster: For the first time ever, I had a post up over at Mommies Daily last Monday. They’re an Indonesian Mommy website packed with lots of useful resources and information. I wrote – well actually translated – a blog post about flying with babies/kids since June – July is pretty much a vacation times in Indonesia. Go check it out and do look for my next installments. Working with Mommies Daily has been fun!

About that much needed holiday: We’ll be going out of town this upcoming Friday and I’m totally excited and can’t wait to get away from Jakarta for a little while.

Lost in Translation

Huadu District

Mama's Losin' It

This week’s prompt sounds like so much fun that I had actually started typing this on Wednesday afternoon while Lil’ A is busy playing contently by himself.

Nothing more fitting, more appropriate to the first prompt than my short time ‘living’ in Guangzhou, China. Oh you wonder why? Simple, because I don’t speak Chinese!

Other than “Xie xie” (thank you) and “Ni Hao Ma” (How are you/Hello) I have absolutely no idea how ‘miserable’ the first month there was going to be.

My third magic sentence is “Bu Ming Bai” (I don’t understand)…well it’s not really that magical because the local Chinese would only talked louder even after slowly and politely told them “Bu ming bai.” My sarcastic mind worked on the same radio wave with DH because he too found this amusing. Most of the locals would only talks louder as if by half screaming would make us understand Mandarin.

It took me awhile to had the nerve to venture outside our compound alone (well with Lil’ A)…to the supermarket we went! That was an experience . Remember that show from early 90′s? What do you call that…the supermarket race where people were given names of items and they had to scour the alleys to find it? Oh yeah, Supermarket Sweep, except this time it was in a super slow motion and I can’t ask for any help!

One day, after been craving for some good ole’ homemade hearty beef stew (perfect for winter dinner, yes?)…I decided to use an online dictionary to translated the ingredients I need into Mandarin – copy & paste into words – print and walaaa….it works like a charm! All I had to do was showing it to the sales associate at the supermarket.

I will never know what this was! Beef something...

Armed with that new trick up my sleeve I even ventured out to the wet market not far from our place.

The worst least appealing experience was when DH urged me to try a local spa at the mall nearby on one weekend. Off I went…although he already taught me – yes sadly he speaks fluent Mandarin now – what to say when I got there, my brain went blank! Had to call him and handed over the cell to the receptionist.

That’s a moment where ‘body language’ was put to the test to it’s max.

The traditional Chinese massage itself wasn’t that bad but wasn’t great either – or maybe I just got a very petite girl – but I was uncomfortable. The room or lack of it was too small and in the middle of the massage – yes while I was laying on my stomach, face down – I started hearing chit chats in Mandarin and saw not one, not two but 4 sets of feet!

Maybe they were gossiping about their boyfriends/husbands/whatever – but laying there half naked and most importantly not understanding a word – I wonder if they were talking about me, if my masseuse called her friends and said “Hey, look at this laowai (foreigner) she’s as huge as a beached whale

Despite those lost in translations moments, I really had a once in a lifetime experience there.

Passport Renewal – Part 2 (The End)

Waiting Area

If you remember when I posted about my brother and me deciding to go took care of our passports ourselves (he’s making a new one while I’m renewing). Here’s part two.

Well, May 18, 2010 was our biometrics day. Danny- my brother – went there early, so early it was before 7, while I waited for our ‘guy’ who made me a new  ID Card  **to change my ‘work status’ to a housewife** to show up.

By the time I got there at 10:30 AM, Danny was done! We went to paid for my biometric on the second floor then handed the receipt to a window by the biometric area and I got me no. A.126 while the little monitor showed they were working on
#50! Was told my turn would be after lunch break. Niceee!

I sneaked to a mall nearby to get some stuffs then rushed back to make it on time – or so I thought! They didn’t start calling people until 1:30PM so waiting hell streched longer than I expected!

The sitting area was super hot with a clear plastic roof. Felt like an oven there.

That was the longest time I had to wait on something and I noticed the ‘agents’ who were as busy as a bee had took most of the  ‘smaller’ numbers for their clients. These are the people who showed up just 30 minutes before their numbers being called.

All our pictures will look so crappy!” claimed an elderly woman who sat right next to me. Amen to that!

It wasn’t until almost 5:30 PM that my number got called. Went inside to the office, didn’t get ask any question other than to verify my name on their computer screen. Right in-front of me was a digital camera attached to a small tripod (there are several tables there). The officer only said “Ok photo time” that’s it – tired and beaten down from the long waiting, I now have the worst passport picture ever! Biometric process took less than 5 minutes!

In total I was there for 7 hours waited in sweltering heat, smelling the stench of overflowing toilets. Ugh!

Today, we just went to picked up our passports. 7 days later after that dreadful experience.

Moral of the story…in 5 years from now I would rather pay more and get it over with than doing it myself. Well, in 2012, Lil’ A have to renew his passport and that my friend, will definitely be done by an agent!

Wordless Wednesday – Lil’ A

Toddler Joy

My first time joining Wordless Wednesday :D

Now that you see Lil’ A, my strong headed – fearless – goof ball – train crazed – sweet – 3.5 years old boy, head over to Gigi’s home at Kludgy Mom or Lish at A Beautiful Mess to join the fun.

Taman Mini Indonesia Indah – Revisited

TMII 001

After many years, last Saturday my mom & aunt suggested that we go to Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (literarily translated it means Indonesia Beautiful Miniature Park).

It’s a cultured-based recreational area with rides and a lot of stuffs to offer but my favorite part is they house – literately speaking – traditional houses from every provinces of Indonesia. That means 26 different traditional houses, real size!

Lil’ A who is train crazed was uber excited when we rode the monorail while his Oma nearly had a heart attack hahaha. Seriously my mom hates rides and basically afraid of heights!

We didn’t get to check out the houses like I wanted because someone ehm…was too train focused so after the monorail he took a ride with a smaller train going around the area with my aunt’s husband.

After that he wanted to ride what they calls Sky Lift…This boy surely inherited his fearless side from both his parents!

There’s one new area there “Snow Bay” – no Indonesia doesn’t have any snows it’s a huge pool/playground area and it’s jammed packed.

Sadly, since the  place is government runs, signs of its old age shown – badly!  I really wish they’d taken better care of the place since Jakarta really doesn’t have that many nice theme park.
