Why I Will Never Drive in Jakarta

Watch this video from YouTube and you’d understand why I think I will never drive in Jakarta.

How bout a more serious look at it?

Oh don’t get me wrong, I did learned eons ago – with stick nonetheless! Even got myself a driver’s license right after I finished my short driving course without a test or anything – yes people, that’s how we roll here. Money talks! BUT I failed my father’s high standards of defensive safety driving. It’s a long story but let’s just say that out of three kids my father have, only one passed his standard and deemed the one that has became his successor.

So, my driver’s license faced its slow death by hiding in my purse for about 5 years and I never get behind wheels again.

In the States, I don’t drive so yeah that was lame.

Back in Jakarta with these kinds of traffic, no matter how much I wish I can drive, I’m afraid it would end up ugly.

Sitting in the passenger seat alone is enough to make me all worked up seeing how crazy motorbikes are around Jakarta’s traffic. So I’m afraid if I’m driving I’d be so tempted to just run them all over.

In the past couple of weeks since I’m back to work and with my father returning to South Africa, I’ve been riding motorbikes with my youngest brother every morning. He would drop me off and I’d catch a taxi or hitch a ride with one of the guys from work.

As much as I’d like to think that I have a brave soul,  sitting on a motorbike makes me nervous now. Not so much because I worry that my brother is a lousy driver – no he’s very careful and doesn’t do the crazy zigzagging like the other drivers. I’m more nervous about the hundreds – if not millions – motorbikes who doesn’t seem to have brakes at all!

For example, my father’s car was hit by a motorbike so badly a couple of months ago when he tried to turn right into our housing complex while another car is making an exit turn left, so it was a blind spot. Out of the blue wham… a motorbike who never bother to hit the break smashed, ripped the back tire of the car and dent the left front door. In a city like Jakarta, no matter what happened, the car will always get blamed for.  Sucks big time!

My father was OK, the car not so much! Big huge dent on the left door, so big that we had to replace the whole door and got a new tire. The two people in the motorbike? They got minor scratches and ended up asking for money to go to the hospital. Insane? Yes!

Back to my daily rides with Danny – my brother -  I’m just scared he would get pissed and punch some careless driver like he did awhile back when he just started working. I could not possibly make this up. Actually I was laughing my ass off when I heard about what happened.

Someone stupidly cut right in front of him while  he had a blinker to turn left. Granted, the two motorbikes collided – not too bad I guess – but bad enough to make my brother left his motorbike and punch the other driver on the face.

Seriously I hate, hate, hate the traffic here. If there weren’t as many motorbikes as it is today, I would probably love driving around Jakarta.

City Crawler – Jakarta’s Biggest Problem

Like many other big cities, Jakarta is well known for its horrendous traffic.

Add some-lots-of rain to the mixture…

Here’s what you’ll end up with

I considered myself lucky enough because my office isn’t around the famous golden triangle – main business district of Jakarta or else I would be one of those who suffer every day going in and out of work, fighting this crazy traffic.

With rain pouring in daily – predicted to stay until February of next year – flooded streets are causing great major traffic jam. Last week, I was stuck in traffic for 2 hours going home and after that I decided to walk a bit with my umbrella further down the street so I can grab a cab then went straight into the toll road.

Not only has the flood, the strong winds also been causing lots of damages in and around Jakarta. One of the drivers at work had his roof blown away.

Watching the news last night, seeing the deadlock on the main roads of Jakarta, floods here and there, I wonder what has the Jakarta’s government done to solve these recurring problems? Every year, people here have to deal with floods and traffic well I hate the traffic here and seriously, people will grow old just going from point A to point B!

Has the government do anything real to solve it? Or they are too busy handing out building permits for more fancy swanky malls and apartments?

Don’t even let me started on the mentality of plenty of people behind the wheels here!

Lack of disciplines plays a huge role too in making the traffic jam even worst. Jakarta is one of the countries where a two way lanes streets can transformed itself into three or four! Amazing huh?

People switching lanes without any blinkers, motorbikes cutting in and out of your way like they’re a mouse going through a maze, obnoxious bus drivers who stopped wherever and waited for their passengers to get on-board whenever they feel like, it all plays some roles in creating this living in Jakarta nightmare.

Some experts has already predict that Jakarta will come to a complete lock-down on its street by the year 2015 but at the rate that we’re going, traffic will be most likely to come to a complete halt sooner.

Sadly, Jakarta’s governor is more proud of showing off Jakarta’s grand malls instead of fixing the infrastructure that will ensure we can minimize flooding.

Will Jakarta emerge from these problems? Clearly moving the capital will not solve the problem in the long run, that’s what this Mom thinks!

Where to, Ma’am?

Starting this Tuesday (September 8, 2009), Mr. X finally has his own driver and car from the company. It took them awhile because they had to hire a new driver for him. Before, there would always be someone who comes and picks him up to-from work but now surely it is much easier on his part especially if he need to go between the hangar and head office.

Mr. X’s first impression of the new driver is “I almost had a heart attacked from the way he drives!” but he thinks it’s mostly because he was too nervous, first day on the job and have to drive a Mister (as he addressed Mr. X). Mr. X also thinks it would be best for me to let our new driver get accustom to the new car and get over his nerves.

Unfortunately, Lil’ A’s cold got worst and he started having a fever on Tuesday night and the cough sounded worst. Noticing how his chest looks a bit contracted when he breathe, my worry-wart get a hold of me and I decided to take him to see his doctor. With Lil’ A’s health history in the past (being hospitalized twice from Bronchiolitis) a mere cold could makes me worry sick.

The car and our new driver, Pak A. came to pick me up. Told him we need to go to The Jakarta Women & Children Clinic at Prapanca. Mr. X was right, it worries me to see the way he drives! While I was busy in the backseat trying to comfort our lil’ patient, I didn’t realized Pak A had missed our toll exit and we were already in Pancoran area. Oh Lord! That’s totally way off our destination. Luckily, despite the heavy traffic, we managed to get there 10 minutes before Lil’ A’s appointment with Dr. Lineus Hewis.

Pak A. admitted that he had cold sweat driving Mr. X the first day. I told him that he needs to relax and just focus on his driving, safely that is without sounding too critical. In a way, I’m glad my father wasn’t in the car with us or he would tell Pak A. to pull the car over and he’ll show our poor driver the proper and safety way to drive.

Mr. X said that we should give him a chance although from today’s second experience being driven by him, I’m still worry. He can drive but there’s a huge differences in having a safety driving skills. Several times today people honks on him because he cut right into traffic without really paying attention to his left or right, or simply because he’s right in the middle of the road.

We’ll be picking up Lil’ A’s car seat this weekend or have my mother bring it to us but I would feel a lot safer with him in one than on my lap, not with the way Pak A is driving.

Hopefully his driving skills will improve! In the meantime, I will have to get used to the idea of having someone that can drive me and Little A around.
